Conscious diet for a sustainable world

Conscious diet for a sustainable world

What we eat every day affects our well-being, but also the environment around us.

We are living a moment of point-of-no-return climate change: the glaciers are melting, biodiversity is decreasing, deserts are expanding and the cause of this is to be attributed also to the way food is produced and consumed.

All of us can, every day, help to slow down these processes.

HOW? Simply by eating more consciously, to protect our only planet!

If you apply these 6 simple tips in your daily routine, you will find out that a sustainable diet is good not only for the planet, but for your health too.

1.  Ditch meat and dairy products

Meat and dairy production requires more food, water, land, and energy than plants and it is one of the main responsibles for carbon dioxide emissions. In general, it is better to reduce not only meat and dairy, but all animal proteins and replace them, with vegetable proteins such as those from legumes and seeds, which are rich in fibres and antioxidant substances. Shifting to a plant-based diet helps reducing water waste and deforestation and it is healthier for you and for environment to, without harming no livings.

2. Don't waste food

Wasting food is not only an ethical matter, but it also has a strong environmental impact, because its production still involves a large use of water and soil. The main causes of wasting food are a poor attention when buying or storing food. To reduce waste at home it is a good idea to prepare a shopping list and respect it, checking expiration dates at the time of purchase and placing the food in the fridge up to one hour later. Make sure that the fridge works properly, checking the seals and the temperature to promote good food preservation.

3.    Buy Fresh and seasonal products

The seasonal products, especially the local ones, take little time to get on our tables and maintain a greater content of vitamins and nutrients than the off-season products, which must be transported and stored in refrigerators before arriving in the supermarket. The seasonal products are tastier and even cheaper. Beyond these reasons, there are also important ecological reasons to prefer the seasonal foods: they help the environment as they cause a lower environmental impact. For example, greenhouse production requires a tremendous amount of energy for maintaining lighting and growing temperatures, which is produced by the use of a large quantity of fuels.

4.    Drink tap water

Bottled water is totally unsustainable for our environment and its consumption can be justified only if tap water is not safe from an hygienic point of view. Bottled water results in a huge increase in the production and waste of plastic, as well as pollution due to transport operations.

Remember: the best water to drink is not necessarily in a bottle: if we want that the water that arrives in our homes is clean, we also should do something for the environment to prevent pollution of rivers, lakes and water flaps, therefore avoiding plastic.

5. Choose eco-friendly packaging

Most of waste comes from packaging. Everything that we buy (food, household detergents or personal hygiene products) needs to be packed in order to arrive in supermarkets and then in our homes. The packaging, however, once arrived in our homes, is transformed into waste. As consumers we can choose to buy products with reusable bags, or with ‘eco-friendly packaging’ , remembering that plastic or non reusable ones ruin the environment as they require resources (energy, water, raw materials) to be produced and have impacts on gas emissions, biodiversity and human health. The packaging also has a significant impact on the price of the finished product.

6. Eat mindfully

To adopt a more sustainable diet one of the simplest things you can do is to focus on what you are eating and its origin. We often consume fast food/ ready meals and we do not spend the right time to prepare and enjoy what we eat. If, instead we paid more attention to our choices, shifting to more eco- friendly ones, our meal would certainly have a higher nutritional value and our health would benefit.
